Xuetong, Yan

Abstract
In ‘The Rise of China and its Power Status’, Yan Xuetong aims to correct problems in previous quantitative assessments of China’s power, using a multi levelled analysis instead of a quantitatively based analysis to evaluate China’s position in the early 21st century. The article highlights the importance of evaluating China’s power, and provides political, military and economic measures for doing so. It is in accordance with these three aspects of China’s power that the author conducts his analysis. Research indicates that China’s comprehensive strength ranks second in the world and that it has the capacity to rise rapidly. Assuming that China does not inflict any major policy mistakes upon itself, the author believes that China will become a de facto superpower by 2015. China can therefore consider formulating an energetic and active foreign policy that is full of positive potential.
