The United States was formally elevated to the status of strategic dialogue partner to ASEAN last November. […E]ngagement at every opportunity, including through ASEAN’s defense-led mechanisms, allows the United States to solidify its current and future role as an Asia-Pacific country. […L]ike other dialogue partners in the ADMM-Plus, the U.S. government has a formal plan of action with ASEAN, which identifies unique, targeted areas of interest to ASEAN that the United States can use as a guide for engaging with the ten member states.
