Thompson’s definition of a rivalry appears to aptly describe relations between Beijing and New Delhi: “long-term hostility” with competition manifest in “multiple disputes, continuing disagreements and the threat of the use of force.” An enduring rivalry, nevertheless, does not preclude significant elements of cooperation between the two states.
