Preview: The election of Donald J. Trump is a turning point in modern American history. On the domestic front, the 45th U.S. president’s unconventional governing style and use of social media has triggered controversy, as has his professed antipathy toward key democratic institutions such as a free press and an independent judiciary. Donald Trump’s presidency has also coincided with the rise of the so-called “alt-right”—a movement that can best be described as an effort to unify and mainstream disparate elements of the American far right. Certain of the darker nativist themes espoused by the former real estate magnate appear to have energized—and in some cases encouraged—groups that had, in the eyes of many, been relegated to the fringes of American society.
